Judge applicants may use the following online form to apply. Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival is a multi-day contest, with each day a separate championship. Note that this KCBS contests is scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

  • I agree to abide by Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) rules, regulations and judging procedures, where indicated. In consideration of acceptance of this application, I the undersigned intend to be legally bound, hereby for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators, waive and release any and all rights and claims for damages I may have against Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival, KCBS, Village of Ruidoso, Ruidoso Midtown Association or any individual or group responsible for the organization or management of any Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival. I hereby grant permission for Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival and/or agents authorized by them to use any photographs, recordings and any other record of this event for any legitimate purpose. I have read and understand all the rules and regulations of Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival, each individual contest, and KCBS (copies may be requested).

We appreciate you helping us make this a successful BBQ competitions. Anyone is eligible to judge the event. Also, certified KCBS judges may judge the Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival. Please complete the application below, or apply online at www.MountianSmokeFestival.com.

Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival takes place at Wingfield Park, 300 Center Street in Ruidoso New Mexico.

Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival Judging Times (unless noted otherwise)

Judges Check-in – 9:15AM-10:30AM – Mandatory Judges Meeting – 10:15 am SHARP ! Day of Event. MARCH 15 – 16 

KCBS TURN-IN: 12pm Chicken, 12:30pm Pork Ribs, 1pm Pork, 1:30pm Brisket.

AUTOMATIC QUALIFIER FOR THE INVITATIONALS

Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival is KCBS-sanctioned as a Double Header State Championship, so the Grand Champion qualifies for the following:

– Jack Daniel’s World Championship

– World Food Championships

KCBS COOK RULES

Each contest is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, whose rules apply to the four main KCBS entries of Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork and Beef Brisket. See Rulebook at HERE

PRIZES

We encourage judges to attend the awards ceremony when possible to celebrate the hard work that goes into cooking for the contest. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded for Grand, Reserve Grand and 1st through 10th for each day’s contests. $4,925.00 will be awarded to Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival’s top teams. 

PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD 

The Peoples Choice Award is a non-sanctioned, just-for-fun contest open to BBQ teams, and cooked on ANY heat source – including wood, charcoal, pellets, propane, deep-fat fryer, microwave, Crock Pot, etc. The Peoples Choice Award will feature a specific categorie at the contest location. The Peoples Choice Award takes place at 5pm – 5:30pm on Friday and Saturday afternoon and will be judged by non-participating teams and event attendees. KCBS judges are welcome to join as judges. The goals are to have fun and introduce new people to BBQ competitions.

Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival is a KCBS double-header, offering teams a chance to compete one or both days. Each “Day” is a sanctioned KCBS state championship, and qualifies separately for The Jack, and World Food Championship. Separate cash awards and trophies will be given daily.

  • IMPORTANT: Please list below all employees who will work at the festival. These names must be provided NO LATER than 24 hours prior to the event.   
  • Please have staff bring photo ID to the festival. Must present a photo ID at check in. 

If a change occurs just contact Matt Ingram @ 575-937-2582 

• Each Alcohol vendor will be issued 4 wristbands. When checking in each staff will be issued with a wristband. If you need to change staff during the event you need to go to the Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival check-in and make the change there and have the new staff member receive a wristband and take over the other from the staff member leaving.
